At 33, he resumed driving lessons, immediately taking a diesel Ford Focus to Maidstone and reaching 60 mph. The friendly instructor eased nerves; stalling was manageable, but gear changes and roundabouts were difficult, with junction practice planned next. Driving promises independence after train trouble and a threatening station gang; he calls it an unfinished adult milestone, partly to impress women.

Driving temporarily displaces his fixation on women, though romantic validation still partly motivates the goal.
