Philip W. Lord served in Africa using Morse code; staying behind to plan his house may have spared him when his unit hit a landmine. PTSD, depression, violence, and divorce fractured the family; after his death, Daniel moved into the unfinished house, losing friends and a comfortable childhood. Daniel now respects his grandfather, feels guilty about abandoning the family legacy, and vows to recreate the house, village, and unfinished projects in Minecraft.

Minecraft becomes his symbolic route to preserve family history and continue a legacy he cannot build physically.
