At 11 in 2000, he met Jay; shared Halo, Warhammer 40K, cycling, sledging, and a paper round made them close. By adolescence, Jay chose mopeds, rougher peers, girls, tattoos, alcohol, and weightlifting; their shared interests and daily walks disappeared. After their 2005 meeting, Jay became a well-paid mechanic with a live-in girlfriend; he preserves Jay as the nerdy child.

Jay’s maturation crystallizes his fear of adulthood: he feels left behind and clings to memories instead of accepting change.
